Selmes family papers, 1816-1930 (bulk 1860-1940).

Correspondence, journals, manuscripts, photographs and keepsakes relating to the Selmes and Benton families and their business, travel, political, and literary interests. The bulk of the collection is correspondence between the two families. The correspondence contains descriptions of the 1850s California Gold Rush and the Civil War. Letters from Tilden Selmes, Sr. include comments on business and financial conditions during the Civil War and descriptions of the South during Reconstruction. Letters from Isabella describe a World War I fund raising event and Women's Land Army activities in New Mexico. Elijah Benton's correspondence deals with Vermont political issues and acceptance letters from prospective teachers in Waltham, Vermont. A civil war journal, kept by Sarah Selmes,or her sister, from Apr. 1861 to Oct. 1861 describes the events of the Civil War, the conflicts in Missouri between northern and southern sympathizers, and the effects of the war on daily life. Notebooks kept by Mary and Sarah Selmes document their literary interests, travel and club discussions.
